Geriatric Optometry

Geriatric Optometry is a specialized branch of optometry focused on addressing the unique eye care needs of older adults. As individuals age, they often experience a range of vision problems and eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Geriatric optometrists are trained to conduct thorough eye examinations that take into account the physiological and psychological changes associated with aging.

In addition to diagnosing and managing these conditions, Geriatric Optometry emphasizes the importance of preventive care, regular screenings, and patient education to help seniors maintain their visual health. By providing personalized treatment plans and recommending appropriate vision aids, geriatric optometrists play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for elderly patients, enabling them to remain active, independent, and engaged in their daily activities.

Geriatric optometrists are trained to recognize the unique visual and ocular health challenges faced by seniors, such as: 

  • Age-related eye conditions: These include cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy. 
  • Presbyopia: A common condition where the ability to focus on near objects diminishes with age. 
  • Comorbidities: Managing vision health in the context of other age-related health issues, such as diabetes or hypertension. 

The goal of geriatric optometry is to enhance the quality of life for older adults by providing comprehensive eye care, recommending assistive devices when necessary, and educating patients and caregivers about maintaining eye health as they age. Prioritizing eye care in older adults is crucial for maintaining independence and enhancing quality of life. Regular exams, awareness of common conditions, and appropriate interventions can significantly improve vision health in this population.

1. Cataract Clinic

2. Glaucoma Clinic

Glaucoma is caused by a build-up of pressure inside the eyes. It is generally an inherited disease and strokes in later life. The increased pressure damages the optic nerve resulting in loss of vision. The vision loss is generally very gradual and may not be noticed early because the loss of vision progresses from outside towards the center. The loss of vision is irreversible. The sooner it is detected and controlled the better will be vision retention. Glaucoma can only be detected through a comprehensive eye examination. Periodic eye checks are vital especially if there is a family history.

Glaucoma treatments 

Eye drops for glaucoma. These either reduce the formation of fluid in the front of the eye or increase its outflow.

Laser surgery for Glaucoma slightly increases the outflow of the fluid from the eye in open-angle glaucoma or eliminates fluid blockage in angle-closure glaucoma. 

In an operation called a trabeculectomy, a new channel is created to drain the fluid, thereby reducing intraocular pressure that causes glaucoma. 

3. Retina Clinic

Retina is the light sensitive lining in the back of eye. It contains millions of special nerve cells which convert light to electrical impulses. These impulses are carried by the optic nerve to the brain where it is converted to images that you see. The retina is a light-sensitive area that converts light into an electrical signal for the visual cortex of the brain. 1. Comprehensive Eye Exam 
 A thorough eye exam is the first step in assessing retinal health. This typically includes: 
 Patient History: Discussing your medical history, family history of eye diseases, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. 
2. Visual Acuity Test 
 This test measures how well you can see: 
 You’ll read letters on an eye chart at a distance to determine your visual clarity in each eye. 
3. Retinal Imaging 
 Advanced imaging techniques provide detailed views of the retina: 
 Fundus Photography: A camera takes high-resolution images of the retina, allowing the doctor to monitor any changes over time. 
 Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): This non-invasive imaging technique creates cross-sectional images of the retina, helping   to visualize layers and detect abnormalities. 
4. Visual Field Test 
 This assesses your peripheral vision: 
 Automated Perimetry: You’ll focus on a central point and indicate when you see lights flash in your peripheral vision, which helps   detect blind spots or other vision changes. 
5. Fluorescein Angiography 
  This test evaluates blood flow in the retina: 
 A dye (fluorescein) is injected into a vein, and photographs are taken as the dye travels through the blood vessels in the retina,   helping to identify any leaks or abnormalities. 
6. Amsler Grid Test This simple test helps assess macular function: 
 You’ll look at a grid of lines; any wavy or distorted lines may indicate problems with the macula, which is critical for central vision. 
7. Indirect Ophthalmoscopy 
 This allows the doctor to examine the retina in detail: 
 A special lens is used with a light source to provide a wide-field view of the retina and optic nerve.
